When stress settles into the body
A hard neck, shoulders up by your ears, a body that won't wind down in the evening. Understanding it rarely resolves it — because the tension isn't in your thinking, it's in your nervous system.
The things most people have written off as normal
These rarely arrive one at a time. Usually they belong together — and they share a common basis.
- 01
Neck and shoulders
The classic: shoulders raised, neck hard, a jaw that works through the night. Massage helps briefly, then it's back.
- 02
Restlessness
An engine still running when there's nothing left to do. Sitting still is hard; doing nothing feels uncomfortable.
- 03
Shallow breathing
Breath stays high in the chest and goes short. Often you only notice once someone points it out.
- 04
Sleep that doesn't restore
Falling asleep takes a while, or you're awake at three. The body isn't coming out of alert.
- 05
Concentration slipping
You read the same paragraph three times. A nervous system running constantly has little left for focus.
- 06
Physically, you've been checked
The tests came back unremarkable — and the symptoms are still real. That's more common than most people think.
Why thinking about it doesn't get you further
Under stress the body shifts into a state that makes short-term sense: muscles tighten, breathing goes shallow, attention narrows. It's built for situations that are over in minutes.
When the load lasts for months, the body stays in that state — including long after the situation has passed. The tension stops being a response and becomes a habit. That's why the insight "I'm stressed" changes so little: the nervous system doesn't take arguments.
What it does respond to is experience. When the body repeatedly finds that tension is allowed to ease and nothing bad happens, the baseline shifts. That's what we work with — through posture, breath and awareness, rather than through explanation.
